SHALDAG MK-II / SHALDAG MK-III

In January 2002, the Israeli Navy announced plans to acquired eight new Fast Patrol Boats (FPB) including six Super Dvora Mk III and two Shaldag II FPBs. The navy had options to order two more Shaldag [Kingfisher] boats. Deliveries were scheduled for late 2003. This order was a part of a US$40 million fleet modernization program that comprised replacement of older Dvora class FPBs with new Israel Shipyards Shaldag II and IAI/Ramta Super Dvora Mk III types which were improved versions of the Dvora class then in service. Both vessels were faster than existing FPBs in Israel Navy service, and capable of operations at extended ranges of up to 700 nautical miles. In September 2006 the Israeli Navy (IN) ordered seven new Fast Patrol Boats from IAI/Ramta and Israel Shipyards, to replace obsolete Dvora and Dabur FPBs. The new order includes Super Dvora Mk III and Shaldag II FPBs.

SHALDAG MK-II

Project's Description:
The SHALDAG MK-II class Fast Patrol Boat is a combat proven craft for security tasks where high intercept speeds are required, such as interdiction of terrorism and illegal smuggling.

Following extensive operational experience in different environments the boat was improved in all aspects.

The boat's special characteristics are:

  1. High speed in rough seas, with good seakeeping and outstanding maneuverability

  2. Exceptionally low slamming in all sea states.

  3. Dry decks at all speeds.

  4. Very spacious and accessible internal arrangement

These characteristics are achieved by unique deep - V planning hull form with two risers a novel hard chine. This design gives the boat an outstanding rough sea performance. The top speed of the boat is close to 50 knots.

Design and Construction

  1. Hull, deck and deckhouse are of welded marine aluminium ally, with transverse frames and longitudinal.

  2. Integral double bottom tanks contain fuel with an additional gravity fuel tank at the center.

  3. The hull is divided into 6 watertight compartments which do meet strict international flooded damage stability criteria

  4. The design and construction are formally approved by Lloyd's Register of Shipping . The stability conforms to the most stringent international standards for dynamic stability.

  5. All machinery is located aft to minimize noise and vibration in the accommodation areas.

  6. The full-height bellow deck compartments provide easy access to the main propulsion engines, their reduction gears and waters jets.

  7. Fully air-conditioned accommodations are provided for 8-10 persons.

Armament

  1. Foredeck and aftdeck rings for 20 mm. single gun mount

  2. Spigots for 0.5" machine guns on both sides of the main deck.

  3. The boat is able to accommodate most advanced new weapon systems, such as the rapid-fire stabilized gun mount, remotely controlled by a night vision system.

Detection and Identification

  1. A navigation radar and a searchlight are installed

  2. Standard Navigation and Communication equipment is provided.

  3. On customer's request a night-vision system, for long range day-and-night detection
    and identification can be offered.

Propulsion System

The boat can accommodate two different propulsion systems:

  1. Two MTU 12V 396 TE engines driving two steerable Ka Me Wa water jets.

  2. Two Deutz - MWM 16V TBD 620 engines driving two steerable LIPS water jets.

  3. Both systems are reliable, well proven and installed on boats in active service.

Electrical System

2 x 30 kW Diesel generators provide the main power, 380 VAC, from which 220 VAC and
24 VDC are supplied by transformers or rectifiers for all electrical power requirements.
